You don’t have to change everything overnight. A few simple steps can help your child ease back into their school-year routine and start the year feeling confident and prepared.

1. Start Adjusting Bedtime Early

One of the biggest challenges after summer is getting back to an earlier bedtime.

Instead of waiting until the night before school starts, begin adjusting your child’s bedtime gradually. Move bedtime earlier by 15–30 minutes every few nights until you’re back to your normal school-year schedule.

Don’t forget about mornings, too! Gradually waking your child earlier can make those first few school mornings much easier.

2. Bring Back a Consistent Routine

Kids often thrive when they know what to expect.

A week or two before school starts, begin bringing back parts of your normal routine:

Regular wake-up times

Breakfast at a consistent time

Getting dressed in the morning

Designated playtime

Reading time

Earlier bedtime

The goal isn’t to recreate a full school day. It’s simply to help your child get comfortable with having a predictable schedule again. For us, that looks like waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, making our beds, brushing our teeth, and pretending we are headed to school!

3. Get Organized Together

Back-to-school preparation doesn’t have to be stressful!

Let your child participate in getting ready. Have them help pick out school supplies, organize their backpack, choose their first-day outfit, or set up their homework space.

Giving children small responsibilities can help them feel more prepared and excited about what’s coming.

4. Talk About the New School Year

Don’t assume your child will automatically tell you if they’re nervous.

Start conversations about school naturally. We just got our teacher assignments today, and that was a great conversation starter!

“What are you most excited about this year?”

“Is there anything you’re nervous about?”

“What would make your first week easier?”

Listen without immediately trying to solve every problem. Sometimes children simply need reassurance that their feelings are normal.

5. Practice the Morning Routine

Last year, my son missed the bus! We did everything right but the bus came earlier than expected. So this year, we will be ready extra early and plan for the unexpected!

A practice run can make a huge difference!

Before the first day, try going through your morning routine together. Wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, pack the backpack, and get ready to leave.

You might even turn it into a fun challenge: Can everyone be ready on time without rushing?

Practicing ahead of time can help eliminate some of the chaos on the actual first day.

6. Make Time for Play

As schedules become busier, don’t forget that kids still need time to simply be kids.

Unstructured play, outdoor time, family activities, and opportunities to relax are important parts of a healthy routine.

Try to protect some time each day where your child isn’t expected to complete homework, participate in an activity, or be on a screen.

7. Ease Back Into Activities

Many families have busy schedules once school begins. Between homework, activities (like gymnastics!), family commitments, and bedtime, it can be easy to over schedule.

As you plan your fall calendar, think about what activities your child genuinely enjoys.

The goal isn’t to fill every afternoon. It’s to create a balanced schedule that gives your child opportunities to learn, play, socialize, and recharge.

8. Celebrate the Little Things

Starting a new school year is a big milestone! This is an “in-between year” for my kids. No new schools, familiar teachers but that doesn’t mean that a new school year isn’t exciting!

Take time to celebrate the small victories—getting through the first morning, making a new friend, completing the first homework assignment, or simply having a good day.

A little encouragement can go a long way toward helping your child feel confident.

9. Be Patient

Most importantly, remember that transitions take time.

Your child may be excited one day and overwhelmed the next. That’s completely normal. Give them time to adjust to new teachers, new routines, new expectations, and a busier schedule.

With consistency, patience, and encouragement, most children find their rhythm again.

Are You Ready for a Great School Year?

A new school year is the perfect opportunity for children to try new things, build friendships, gain confidence, and discover what they enjoy.

At Shooting Starz Gymnastics, we love being part of your child’s routine throughout the school year. Our goal is to provide a fun, positive environment where kids can stay active, build confidence, and have something exciting to look forward to each week.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and successful school year!

–Ms. Becky

As our Summer Session comes to a close, we are starting to think about school. For many of our SSG gymnasts, school starts next week or the week after. My kids have had a great summer of camps, late night s’mores, and even some drive-in movies so we need to transition now to an earlier […]

[1

post-3775","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
